The book deals with the evolution of Indian art from 300 BC to 300 AD, believed to be the formative phase of Indian art. The Indian artists, with centuries of background in creative art on wood, ivory, clay and bamboo, began to use stone as a medium. Indian art gradually became successful in achieving three-dimensional forms. This book traces the history of the growth and development of the art that flourished at Sanchi Bharhut, Bodh-gaya, Karla, Bhaja, Pithalkhora, Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, etc., which later culminated in the classical art of the Guptas.en_US
